Great Science Adventures(Common Sense Press)

Developed by Dinah Zike, M.Ed and Susan Simpson (creator of Learning Language Arts Through Literature)

Great Science Adventures is a hands-on science program that includes activities for ages throughout the elementary years. The benefit of this is that it can be used with children of different ages and you can begin with any book/program you wish. Because there are activities for primary, junior and intermediate students, it is not grade specific. This is an interactive and very cost-effective program!

Each book/program contains 24 lessons so if you are working at the program regularly, you can likely complete two or more books in a year. Alternatively, you can use just one or two books and spend any extra time expanding on the information with other resources or activities.

American History and Geography

“The American Story”: 100 True Tales from American History -by Jennifer Armstrong, Illust by Roger Roth - Ideal for using as a base/overview of American History.

This is a fantastic book with engaging illustrations clearly written accounts of one hundred events in American history. Beginning with stories like “First City” from 1565 and “People of the Longhouse” from 1570 and ending with “Hubble Trouble” from 1990 and the “The Election” from 2000, this book offers a very friendly way to find out about how the United States of America came to be. From serious historical events such as Paul Revere’s “Midnight Ride” at the beginning of the American Revolution and the civil rights stories of Rosa Parks and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to fun, detailed stores about the incidental invention of potato chips or Pac-Man mania of the 1980’s. “The American Story” gives a balanced overview of many aspects of American life over time.

Historical fiction is a wonderful tool for expanding and personalizing events and time periods. Particularly when the main characters are children, it can make the story easier to identify with. The following are suggestions for novels, chapter books and sophisticated picture books to accompany and build on stories from “The American Story.”
